There are many different definitions when you search the internet for “what is dyslexia”. Some are broad and others more scientific or narrow, but they all have some common overlapping themes. As part of my research, I encountered three separate websites that attempted to define or explain what Dyslexia is;
· British Dyslexia Association
· International Association of Dyslexia
· The Yale Centre for Dyslexia & Creativity
Together, I feel these explanations best describe what Dyslexia is and I have provided a summary of common themes and important facts from my perspective.
Dyslexia Canada has adopted the definition from the International Association of Dyslexia and points to the Yale Centre for Dyslexia and Creativity for further information as to what is Dyslexia.
As noted in the What is Dyslexia page of The Yale Centre for Dyslexia and Creativity’s website, People with dyslexia have trouble matching the letters they see on the page with the sounds those letters and combinations of letters make. When having trouble with the first step, all the other steps become challenging.
From my experience, this can affect the skills involved in;
· spelling and writing,
· accurate word recognition and decoding abilities,
· reading comprehension,
· an individual’s ability to read quickly and automatically and,
· to retrieve spoken words easily.
