Having a Resource teacher (case worker) can be your best ally in the school system. A resource teacher helps to develop your Independent Education Plan (IEP) with you and helps to ensure that it is supported. They provide and arrange learning support in school, help advocate on your behalf as necessary and encourage and mentor you throughout the school year.
I interviewed a Resource teacher (case worker) to gain her insights into how an IEP is developed, what its purpose is for and what benefits it can have for a student.
I myself find having an IEP helpful because:
a. It lists adaptions, which can be made to educational materials, instructional strategies or
assessment methods, so I can achieve my best work
b. It lists my weaknesses as well as my strengths
c. It lists goals and strategies to help me
d. It lists services and resources that the school will provide
e. It entails a plan to track my progress
