The initial purpose of my website was to fulfill a requirement for my graduation from high school, but throughout the process I’ve come to realize that sharing my Dyslexic journey and knowledge has been a helpful and reflective experience for me and that others starting out on their journey or looking for more information about Dyslexia may find my website beneficial.
My Story:
My name is Engelie and I was diagnosed with Dyslexia when I was 6 years old. Looking back, my parents saw the signs much earlier on such as difficulty pronouncing letter sounds and decoding words but with support, hard work and a tenacity to never give up when the going gets tough, I’ve persevered and grown stronger throughout my journey.
Getting assessed was a very important step because it provided me with the tools to navigate my diagnosis and succeed at anything I put my mind to such as performing at the provinces’ highest level of soccer, the BC Soccer Premier League, participating in fundraising initiatives that transform lives through sport & community development programs and embracing the strengths that dyslexic people have such as; creativity, ability to visualize things, good problem-solving skills (thinking outside the box), observational awareness, the ability to see the big picture (global thinking) in terms of strategies and problem-solving and high levels of motivation and persistence. It’s all about the right attitude and not being afraid to ask for help.
My moto is: Don’t let the fear of failing at something stop you from trying something new. Surround yourself with the best support, work hard and never give up. If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again.
